What Can I Do with My Insomnia, Accompanying with Frequent Fatigue, Back Pain and Poor Appetite?

Female, 31 years old, unknown fatigue for six months, insomnia, muscle pain and poor appetite.

Question

I am a teacher in a secondary school and work under high pressure. For the last six months, I have been getting tired very easily although I haven’t done any exercise. The discomfort is accompanied by poor appetite, dry throat and little as well as poor quality sleep, thus affecting my next day at work. I begin to fear cold because my arms, legs, and shoulders feel sore and painful after getting cold. Additionally, I am experiencing substantial hair loss and as I am only 31 years old I greatly worry about that. And the dizzy feeling which I get with headaches is also debilitating. I haven't had any treatment before, can you help me?

Main Symptoms

•  Unknown fatigue for 6 months

•  Poor appetite

•  Soreness of muscles

•  Dizziness with headache

Answer

Based on your description, the symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, fear of cold, soreness of back and poor appetite correspond to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). In western medicine, CFS could be caused by various factors like virus infection, immunological problems, neurological problem and mental illness, and has so far failed to give a specific reason for this illness.

According to TCM, debilities of qi and blood, caused by weak kidneys and a damaged spleen and stomach, can induce CFS with non-specific symptoms like you describe. In general, people who are overworked or think too much are prone to this disease, so it is recommended to spend enough time to rest and reduce mental pressure.

Chinese medicine always uses tonic food therapy or nutritional adjustment to treat CFS. Moreover, the appropriate intake of fruit containing alkaline and vegetables in the diet help sufferers to get rid of CFS and build a healthy body. Alkaline fruit includes watermelon, peach, plum, apricot, lychee, cantaloupe, cherry, and strawberry.

To exclude other diseases with certain symptoms that you haven’t mentioned, I recommend you go to the hospital and undergo relevant examinations.
