How to Get Rid of Headache on the Right Side of the Head & Eye Discomfort

Male, 23 years old, student, suffering from discontinuous headache on the right side of the head for a week.

Question

A week ago, I saw white dots and flashing light, then my eyes began to feel uncomfortable. After that headache started on the right side when I am working on the computer. However, my eyes feel no pain when I am in a dark room. At first, I thought it might be because I was too tired and didn’t get enough rest, but it didn’t get any better even after I had lots of sleep. What can I do to ease the pain? Should I go to a doctor to have it examined?

Main Symptoms

•  One-sided headache

•  Sensitive to light

•  See white dots or flashing light

•  Dizzy feeling after headache

Answer

According to your symptoms of one-sided headache and eye pain, you may have a migraine, a type of headache that is caused by a blockage in blood vessels of the brain. To exclude other intracranial diseases like inflammation and brain tumor, you should have some tests like a CT which scans the inner structure of the brain and determines the root of the headache.

Sometimes, when the headache starts suddenly, try to:

Go and have a rest in a quiet place with dim lights

Lie on the bed and close your eyes

Listen to light music to calm the nerves

Soak your hands in warm water

  Investigate Chinese acupuncture therapy

Actually, many headaches, including migraine, can be triggered by dietary habits and lifestyles. In other words, to avoid headaches, you should look at the triggers of headache caused by food and your way of life, for example:

1. Have a regular and adequate sleep pattern during both workdays and weekend. More than eight hours’ sleep at a time may cause a headache. Don’t extend the sleep time because of a headache.

2. Avoid sitting or standing in the same place for a long period of time, because this may lead to a poor posture, which in turn may cause tension in your lower back, shoulder, and neck and can lead to a headache.

3. Protect your eyes. Dazzling or bright light makes you squint, leading to eye fatigue, which finally induces headaches. Remember to wear sunglasses outdoors and take a rest if you use a computer or read a book for a long time.

4. Control your intake of coffee and beer. Certain substances in coffee and beer can stimulate the brain nerves and distend the blood vessels, thus triggering a migraine.

5. Do not eat cheese and dark chocolate. The chemicals in this food can cause migraine attacks. It’s best to take an allergy test and consult a doctor about what foodstuff you can eat.

Take appropriate medication prescribed by your doctors.
