Ulcerative colitis (UC), a type of chronic colitis disease, attacks the inner lining of the large intestine in the form of ulcers for an unknown reason. The main symptoms of this are abdominal pain and diarrhea accompanied by bloody stools, 2 to 4 times a day, in severe cases even up to 10 times.
UC patients often suffer from malnutrition, thinness, and anaemia. Therefore, in addition to general therapy, they should rationally adjust nutrition to high-calorie, protein-rich, high-vitamin, low-fat, and low-fibre foods. The following section presents relevant tips for your information.
1. High-calorie and protein-rich food
The lack of nutrition caused by diarrhea can be supplemented by high-calorie and protein-rich foods like fish, eggs, and lean pork, and the amount of this diet can be gradually increased according to the absorption of the patient. Generally, adults need 40 kilocalories and 1.5g of protein per kilogram of body weight every day.

2. Vitamins
Comprehensive vitamin intake and inorganic salt supplement the lack of nutrition through diarrhea. Patients can eat some fruit that contains many vitamins but low fibre, such as apples, tomatoes, and kiwi fruits.

3. Limit the intake of fat and dietary fibre
Diarrhea tends to induce a poor absorption capacity of fat, so the amount of fat should be controlled by food intake. You should choose low-fat foods and methods such as stewing and steaming while cooking, and avoid stimulating ingredients (like onion, ginger, and hot pepper), fibre-rich foods (like carrots, celery and bean products) and high-fat foods (like fat pork and chicken).
4. Eat often and little
Food intake should be based on the principle of ‘eat often and little’ to reduce the intestinal load.
5. Avoid irregular dietary
Irregular food intake can trigger acute gastroenteritis, especially in summer, because hot weather can affect appetite and make nerves tense, stimulate changes in the endocrine system, and directly reduce digestive capacity. In addition, people tend to ignore regular meals or only eat vegetable for lack of appetite. Some women who want to lose weight replace meat with vegetables and fruits, which damages the stomach and intestines, leading to acute gastroenteritis and ulcerative colitis. In some cases, their immunity decreases due to the unbalanced diet.
