Extreme Tiredness without Any Reason--Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Ask a Question

Do you experience extreme tiredness without any reason and unknown fatigue with non-specific symptoms like sore throat, new type of headache or joint pain without swelling or redness? But the report of your physical examination shows that all values are normal and it is difficult to diagnose the explicit disease. Maybe you should consider if you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). The following article will show you what CFS is.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Yuppie Disease, is a type of disease characterised by the symptoms of prolonged fatigue, defined as intense fatigue or physical discomfort for no apparent reason for more than six consecutive months.

In 1987, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) proposed the concept of chronic fatigue syndrome and defined the official declaration of CFS at the International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Group Meetings in 1994. CFS should have the following two criteria:

1) Exclude the fatigue caused by other diseases for more than six consecutive months. And

2) Meet at least four of the following symptoms:

Substantial impairment in short-term memory or concentration

 •  Sore throat

 •  Pain in lymph nodes

 •  Unexplained muscle pain

 •  Joint pain without swelling or redness

 •  A new type or severity of headache

 •  Not restful sleep

 •  Unknown discomfort for successive 24 hours after physical or mental activity

1. Common symptoms of CFS include fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, dispirited mood, irritable and restless feeling, slow response, inattention, rough and dry skin, hair loss, weight gain and poor digestion.

2. The characteristics of CFS

 •   Sufferers can experience fatigue at an inappropriate moment, for instance, the tired feeling appears while doing exercise in low strength and duration but it’s acceptable before. Compared to physical fatigue, CFS has no identified trigger and reason without a systematic examination by doctors, thus naming it unknown fatigue.

 •   The fatigue of CFS, always strong, disappears slowly after sufficient rest. The symptoms can disappear when the disease is cured.

 •   Accompanied by other symptoms such as low fever, general malaise and poor or excessive appetite, the fatigue may be the symbol or sign of CFS. If you have an unknown long-lasting fatigue with other symptoms mentioned above, it’s better to see your GP soon.

What causes the chronic fatigue syndrome?

There is no rational and explicit reason for CFS in western medicine. At present, most scholars in the medical field believe that the trigger factors could involve virus infection, immunological problems, neurological problems and mental illness. Clinical and epidemiological research has found no coherent agreement on the relationship between environment and other risk factors.

Eastern medicine explains that CFS is caused by a lack of spleen-qi. The spleen is the source of Qi and blood that works in muscles and limbs and are closely related to the absorption, transmission, and excretion of fluid in the tissue. An irregular diet and too much thinking can damage spleen and stomach, leading to spleen dysfunction and loss of Qi and blood. If the fluid becomes irregular for a long time, the useless remains can accumulate in the body and harm your health, causing limb pain, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, bloating, diarrhoea, and so on.

How to treat CFS?

Doctors suggest that CFS patients should relax more to relieve pressure. Most sufferers can recover in two weeks, depending on autoimmune without treatment. If systems persist after that, you should accept the appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

1. Eastern medicine treatment

The efficacy of western medicine in CFS patients is limited. Doctors may prescribe painkillers that help you to reduce headaches or other pain, and/or antidepressants to lighten your mental load and promote sleep, however, these medications treat only temporarily the symptoms rather than the root of CFS.

Chinese medicine shows that diet and exercise are critical for the treatment of CFS. For example, dietary supplements containing a medical mushroom or an aloe can achieve the therapeutic purpose.

  • Ginseng, burdock root, Lycium barbarum, dandelion, and goldenseal are the most useful materials to treat CFS if you drink 4 to 6 cups of tea from these herbs every day. Ginseng has the function of improving immunity, recovering energy and relieve fatigue.

  • Lycium barbarum contains strong vitality and is powerful to remove fatigue, which effectively promotes blood circulation and prevents arteriosclerosis and fat accumulation in the liver. In addition, the rich vitamins, the essential amino acids and γ-linolenic acid in Lycium barbarum can stimulate the metabolism and prevent aging. The leaf of Lycium barbarum can be made into tea leaves. People always cook or drink the tea of Lycium barbarum fruit, also termed wolfberry. And the root bark of Lycium barbarum is a kind of herbal material. However, since Lycium barbarum has the strong effect on the warming of the body, people with high blood pressure and irritability should restrict the intake. In contrast, it benefits people who easily feel cold or have weak health and immunity.

2. Lack of exercise

Scientific data shows that mild sports such as yoga help CFS patients, but excessive exercise is not advocated.

3. Beware of aspirin

Aspirin may trigger Reye syndrome, a serious side effect of medications with high mortality.

4. Diet therapy

   Eat more fresh vegetable

It is better for you to choose a balanced diet - 50% of raw vegetables and 50% of juice - to improve the function of immunity and accelerate regeneration. These foods contain vegetables, fruits, wheat, seeds and nuts, skinless turkey and deep-sea fish that can provide rich nutrients and strength and boost immunity.

 •  Green drink

Green drink refers to vegetable juice containing rich vitamins, made from carrots, radishes, vegetables or wheatgrass. Otherwise, the intake of chloroplasts has the same effect.

 •  Drink more water

CFS patients should drink a large amount of water (at least 8 cups) and juice. In addition, the intake of fibre is necessary, because water and fibre can promise regular bowel movement. Occasionally an enema is an efficient tool to eliminate the harmful substance in your body.

 •   Eat several small meals

In order to maintain the balance between blood sugar and high energy, it is advisable to eat small meals 4 to 6 times a day, but overeating in any meal is to be avoided. Research finds that taking low-fat protein at bedtime or after getting up in the morning helps increase energy levels. These proteins exist in low-fat cheese, tofu, lentils and other bean products.

5. Self-acupressure therapy

 •   Massaging the kidneys helps you to relieve fatigue and ease the tension. Dip your back into the tub filled with warm water and massage the kidneys with your fist for 3 to 5 minutes.

 •   Acupressure: locate the acupoint of the Foot Three Miles, four fingers wide bellows the kneecap (on the protruding muscle) and apply with moderate pressure for 5 minutes.

6. Tonic soup therapy

Ginseng & Chicken soup

Main ingredients: tender hen, ginseng, milk soup stewed with meat like fish and pork bones.

Directions:

 •  Clean and slice the ginseng

 •  Remove all the organs of the hen and cut the feet

 •  Heat the milk soup

 •  Put the hen and ginseng in the casserole (earthenware pot) and simmer with a slow fire.

Effectiveness:

 •  In order to regulate the function of spleen and stomach, one must stimulate the appetite and strengthen the immunity.

 •  To produce the qi in the kidney and nourish it, which can treat the soreness of the back

 •  To treat the lack of spleen and kidney and to supply the qi and blood

 •  This formula is suitable for people who become tired during physical activities or have a chronic health status.

How to prevent (chronic fatigue syndrome) CFS?

If you pay attention to the following six principles in your lifestyle, CFS will stay away from you.

 •  Get up 15 minutes earlier. You can feel that there is enough time to do other things. A new day starts with enough time that you can control instead of diligence and fatigue.

 •  The intake of vitamins such as multivitamins and vitamin B not only helps with the carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, but also coordinates the function of nerves and muscles.

 •  Give up smoking and drinking coffee. Smoking can block the transmission of oxygen to physical tissue, resulting in inadequate oxygenation of the brain, causing a feeling of fatigue. In addition although coffee has a refreshing effect, it can consume the vitamin B group, which plays an important role in the coordination of nerves and muscles.

 •  Eat less dessert. Excessive sugar can activate insulin, which affects blood sugar levels, making you restless and fatigued, causing one to become obese.

 •  Take a shower regularly. The shower helps to regain physical energy as the anion (negative ion) spreads in the ambient air when you take a shower, which brings you happiness and vitality.

 •  Take a nap. For older or overworked and sleep-deficient people, it is necessary to have a regular nap, but no more than 1 hour at a time.
